Habitat Restoration Site
Prioritization and Design
Location
San Acacia Reach of the Rio Grande, New Mexico
Client
New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission
Project Description
GSA is performing site assessments and analyses to prioritize restoration project sites along 31-mile reach of the Rio Grande in Socorro County, NM. The project involves screening and prioritizing locations along the reach with greatest potential to improve habitat for the federally endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow (RGSM) and the Southwestern willow flycatcher (SWFL).
We are performing site assessments to determine potential for flood inundation at different sites using various restoration techniques. The goal is to expand off-channel spawning and rearing habitat for the RGSM and improve breeding habitat for the SWFL.
Project elements involve coordinating land owner/project sponsors, performing topographic surveys, developing 1- and 2- dimensional surface-water hydrologic models, mapping riparian vegetation, developing project restoration designs and planning-level cost estimates.
